What is a Kunstler Club?
A Kunstler Club is a small group of neighbors who are taking
concrete steps to increase the resilience of their neighborhood in
the event of economic collapse, energy or resource shortages,
and/or natural or manmade disasters.
What a Kunstler Club is not:
- An educational, informational, or study group
- A political pressure group or action committee
- An investment club or other financial organization
- An organization whose continued operation depends on the formal
economy
Some of these sorts of activities might still be worthwhile, but
they do not fulfill the intention of the Kunstler Club concept,
which is to get people to actually do something on a very local
level about our challenges, rather than just talk about them.
Operation of a Kunstler Club
- A Kunstler Club shall have one or more defined, concrete
projects which all members are working on cooperatively to
accomplish. Each project shall be something that increases the
resilience of the neighborhood to dislocations resulting from
climate change, resource depletion, and/or economic or political
disorder. If a Kunstler Club does not have one or more such
projects in progress, it has no purpose for existence.
- A Kunstler Club can be started with as few as 2 or 3 people,
and may have up to 13 people. If the membership exceeds 13, the
Club should split into two clubs, with the split preferably
organized by geographic proximity. If more than 13 members are
required to make a project happen, that project, while possibly
still worthwhile, may be outside of the scope of the Kunstler Club
concept.
- Every member should participate in each project the Club
undertakes. If a new project is contemplated that only a portion of
the membership is interested in, it may make sense to start a new
Club to support that project.
- A Kunstler Club may be permanent or temporary. Temporary
Kunstler Clubs could be organized around completion of a specific
project that does not require continued involvement to be useful
after it is completed.
Some Ideas for good Kunstler Club projects
- Building and operating a community garden
- Small renewable energy projects
- A barter network
- Seed-saving cooperative
- Improving energy efficiency of residences
- Labor pool for members’ gardening activities
- Neighborhood block watch or citizens’ patrol
- Food storage and preservation projects
